Passenger pier and quay in Krynica to be extended

The pier and the quay in the Krynica port will be extended and the slope will be secured. This is good news for both the residents of Krynica Morska and tourists visiting the Vistula Lagoon.

Currently, the passenger pier is approximately 100 metres long. Due to the fact that it will be extended by over 65 metres, it will open the possibility for passenger ships up to 36 m long and vessels of the Maritime Office in Gdynia, which is the investor, to moor there.

Importantly, the safety of vessels will also increase, as extending the pier will reduce waving inside the port.

“The extension will be made based on the existing design documentation. According to the design, the pier will be lengthened with the use of steel sheet piling in the bulkhead structure. “Inside the bulkhead, a soil backfill will be made and covered with the surface,” says Krystian Kwidziński, Head of Hydrotechnical Works from NDI. “The new section will also be equipped with new mooring bollards, fenders, access ladders, and lighting in the main axis of the pier. Dredging works are planned on both sides of the pier. New signs will appear for good navigation. Sanitary and energy installations will be built,” adds Krystian Kwidziński

But this is not all. The Sopot-based NDI group, in the “Design and Build” formula, will also secure the slope and extend the berth in the port of Krynica Morska by 50 metres.

This part of the work also provides for dredging works, strengthening the eastern section of the North Basin (91 metres long) and the northern shore of the North Basin.

There are also plans to pave nearly 200 metres of a nearby road with new lighting. For those who come by car, there will be a car park for 22 cars.

The construction of new hydraulic engineering and road structures will increase the importance of the port on the tourist map of the Polish coast.

“The activities carried out as part of the investment will solve the problem of waves in the port, improve safety, enable full use of infrastructure and increase the port’s availability for various vessels. This is not the only investment of the Maritime Office in Gdynia that responds to the needs of the residents of Krynica Morska. We have recently completed the construction of flood protection on the 4-kilometre-long section from the side of the Vistula Lagoon. As part of this investment, a service road was built on the top of the embankment, which is a beautiful walking route. Additionally, the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture is in the process of verifying our application documentation for the construction of the western breakwater with a length of approx. 134 lm in the marina in Krynica Morska – Basin III Nowa Karczma,” said Master Mariner Wiesław Piotrzkowski, Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

Works in the port of Krynica are to finish next year. The contractor, the NDI group, has 17 months to complete them. The investor is the Maritime Office in Gdynia. The cost is PLN 8 million gross. Its significant part will be covered by EU funding from the Regional Operational Programme of the Pomeranian Voivodeship for 2014-2020.
