Three hectares of yard at the Port of Gdynia a year ahead of schedule!

Work 24 hours a day, a concrete mixing plant at the construction site and combining various technologies – it is, among others, thanks to this that three hectares of manoeuvring and storage yards in the Port of Gdynia are ready for use. If we keep it up, the pavement of the yards with a total area of 18 ha will be completed already this year.

“The scope of our work includes the construction of two yards with a concrete surface with a total area of 180 thousand square metres. Currently, the progress of the works is such that the foundations have been made in 100 percent, and the pavements in 50 percent,” says Przemysław Młynarczyk, NDI Site Manager. “The remaining work includes surface and paving works as well as finishing activities, such as topsoiling and fencing.”

The investor is satisfied with such rapid progress, as they will be able to use the new space very soon, and this, in turn, will allow for the further development of the Port of Gdynia.

“We are pleased that within approximately half of the time for the implementation of this project, the general contractor puts the first three-hectare part into use, thus being significantly ahead of schedule. Thanks to this, we will soon be able to offer these yards to our customers,” says Jacek Sadaj, President of Zarząd Morskiego Portu Gdynia SA. “Gdynia is part of the trans-European transport network; therefore, we place great emphasis on the development of intermodal connections and they will also be implemented in this part of the port.”

The yards built in Logistyczna Street are made of concrete. They are 45 centimetres thick.

“They have a load capacity of 20 tonnes per square metre, thanks to which they enable the storage of containers up to a height of six layers or outsize cargoes.

The surface of the yard is arranged in one layer, made of fibre-reinforced concrete. Additionally, concrete slabs are dowelled in all directions. Although the investment is proceeding extremely smoothly, it is not the easiest one.

“The greatest challenge, apart from ensuring the continuity of supplies of material for the production of 80,000 m3 of concrete in such a short time, is the weather. Laying concrete pavement requires maintaining a high technological regime,” emphasizes Sylwia Rogall, NDI Project Director.

And she adds that the work progress is so fast thanks to the work 24 hours a day, setting up a concrete mixing plant on the construction site and combining various paving technologies.

If the current pace of work is maintained, all paving works on 18 hectares of storage yards will be completed this year.

As part of the construction of yard no. 1, linear drainage, as well as reconstruction and construction of underground and above-ground utilities, were also carried out, i.e. the construction of a rainwater sewage system with a retention reservoir, sanitary sewage system, and water supply, as well as electricity and telecommunications work.

All that remains to be done is to install the fence, build platforms for cooling containers and a fire water pumping station.

A similar scope of works applies to yard no. 2. Additionally, access roads from Logistyczna Street will have to be built there.

The value of the works covered by the contract is approximately PLN 70.7 million net.
