MKiŚ: The government has adopted the “Polish hydrogen strategy”

The Ministry of Climate and Environment informs: On November 2, 2021, the Council of Ministers adopted a resolution on the adoption of the “Polish hydrogen strategy until 2030 with a perspective until 2040”, submitted by the Minister of Climate and Environment.

The Polish Hydrogen Strategy is a strategic document that defines the main goals of the development of the hydrogen economy in Poland and the directions of actions needed to achieve them. The document is part of global, European and national activities aimed at building a low-emission economy. The aim of the strategy is to create the Polish branch of the hydrogen economy and its development in order to achieve climate neutrality and maintain the competitiveness of the Polish economy. Investments in the development of hydrogen technologies offer solutions enabling decarbonisation in those sectors of the economy where decarbonisation is economically unjustified or impossible through electrification. The document provides for the development of support programs for the construction of a hydrogen economy, with this aid only covering low-emission hydrogen, i.e. hydrogen from renewable sources and produced with the use of non-emission technologies. Obtaining support for the production of hydrogen from fossil fuels will only be possible if carbon dioxide capture technologies (eg CCS / CCU) are used.

The strategy sets 6 goals:

  1. implementation of hydrogen technologies in energy and heating;
  2. use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel in transport;
  3. support for the decarbonisation of industry;
  4. hydrogen production in new installations;
  5. efficient and safe hydrogen transmission, distribution and storage;
  6. creating a stable regulatory environment.

 

The indicators for achieving the goals in 2030 are:

  • 2 GW of the capacity of the installation for the production of hydrogen and its derivatives from low-emission sources, processes and technologies, including in particular the installation of electrolysers;
  • 800 – 1,000 new hydrogen buses, including those made in Poland;
  • min. 32 hydrogen refueling and bunkering stations;
  • at least 5 hydrogen valleys.

Given the high potential for domestic production of hydrogen from local raw materials, the role of environmentally positive hydrogen technologies will be crucial in the future. The most important environmental factors are: low- or zero-emission hydrogen technologies and the safety of hydrogen technology and infrastructure with a minimal impact on the local natural environment.
