Dr inż. Andrzej Czapczuk, Vice Presidentof the Board and General Director of F.B.I. TASBUD
You have been involved in the construction industry for several years. Which stage of your professional career turned out to be crucial?
I have always believed that the most important thing is not to stand still, but to constantly develop, to make sure that what we do is our passion and a source of pleasure every day. Cooperation with interesting, creative people, taking up new challenges and setting ambitious goals are the elements that motivate me to act and push me to go further. I can’t put my finger on any specific moment that was crucial; each of them was undeniably important, necessary and helped me develop both professionally and personally. These were interesting and enlightening lessons, and so will be all the other lessons that are still ahead of me.
You attach great importance to your employees and their qualifications. What is your recipe for managing a team in such a large company?
In F.B.I. TASBUD capital group, with its international scope of operations, we have always believed that people are the key to a thriving company. They are the ones who give the company its character, build it and integrate it every day. A team comprising carefully selected members is the greatest asset of the company and its importance cannot be overestimated. Our philosophy is very clear – we focus on our employees at every stage of cooperation. We support their development, believe in them and enable them to spread their wings. There are many employees who started working with us when they were young and inexperienced. Today, they hold management positions. This is a perfect reflection of our philosophy – we invest in our staff, and they return the favour by showing loyalty and great commitment. It is thanks to them that we have developed business stability and a priceless team. Although the company is constantly growing, we did not fall into a corporate routine. We focus on friendly contacts based on partnership and family atmosphere, which is confirmed by many awards and distinctions we received in recognition of our values and management style. I am convinced that our team is what distinguishes us from other companies. A good team that can count on each other and does not give up in difficult moments is of greatest value for the employer.
Apart from this pro-employee philosophy, you are also very strongly involved in social and charity projects.
Helping people has always been important for F.B.I. TASBUD. Many individuals address us and ask for support. We listen to everyone and try to help them if we can. Every year, our employees organize a fund raiser for children from orphanages and single mothers’ homes. The company also supports schools by engaging in various forms of material aid. We always provide advice in the field we know best, i.e. construction. For many years we have been cooperating with the AKOGO Foundation and we contributed to the expansion of the Alarm Clock Clinic. We have also performed some work for Janusz Korczak Orphanage No. 2 in Warsaw. What goes around comes around and we are convinced that acts of kindness count double.
Today, companies attach great importance to running their business in a sustainable and responsible manner. What measures is F.B.I. TASBUD taking in this area?
As a conscious market player, we strive to make informed decisions about the development of our Group. We thoroughly analyse risks and observe the economy both in Poland and abroad in order to be always prepared for possible changes, we always want to be one step ahead of the challenges and competitors. We are aware that the construction sector has an exceptionally strong impact on the natural environment, therefore, as one of Poland’s leading general contractors, we feel obliged to take steps to reduce our environmental footprint. Sustainable development is part and parcel of our business plans. It is our ambition to improve and refine our processes. We select subcontractors so as to improve our environmental standards, and the materials used are always selected in terms of ecology and energy efficiency. We are also committed to recycling, both in all offices and on construction sites. We want our investments to be a showcase and a model for others.
Many industries are struggling with numerous difficulties, including the shortage of qualified staff. What are the challenges facing F.B.I.TASBUD?
The construction market has never been simple and uniform – there is a lot going on. We try to prepare in advance for changes and turbulences in the sector and do business in such a way that the inconveniences are transformed into opportunities and competitive advantages of the Group. Currently, as a general contractor, we run simultaneously more than 20 investments in Warsaw alone, there are also those in other parts of the country, as well as abroad, e.g. in Sweden, where we develop export construction – all our construction sites have professional resources, both employees and materials. What is important, they are implemented on time and with due diligence, which means we can thrive despite market adversities. After 35 years, our Group is well-established and attracts the best specialists, which I am most proud of.
F.B.I. TASBUD S.A. is currently one of the most active general contractors on the Polish market. What is the company’s investment plan for this year?
We are glad that our activity is more and more visible and our strong position on the market is recognised. The Group is constantly developing in order to carry out more and more interesting investments in every field of construction. International markets, where our Group is becoming more and more active as a general contractor, are also of great importance to us. For example, in Sweden we are the only Polish general contractor with such extensive experience and projects underway. We attach great importance to the development of the Prefabrication Division and the dynamic Research and Development Division which is the driving force behind the application of new technologies and intelligent systems on individual construction sites. It is certainly an element that distinguishes us from the competition and helps us implement further investments.
Your company is also active abroad, including in Sweden, Kuwait and Libya. What are the benefits of foreign expansion? Can we call you a “global player”?
Assigning such labels is not up to us, but we are grateful for the appreciation of our multifaceted efforts, because we have always had international ambitions. Diversification is of paramount importance for the Group’s stability, hence our history to date including facilities in Libya, our current activity in the Scandinavian market and more. We are a comprehensive general contractor implementing investments in the Design&Build system in prefabricated technology, an example of which is a housing estate, e.g. in the city of Olofström. Thanks to the dynamically operating Polish Cluster of Construction Exporters F.B.I. TASBUD is the leader in a pioneer project called the Polish Modular Hospital, dedicated to developing markets. We try to anticipate the needs and opportunities of the construction sector based on many years of experience and thanks to a team of specialized professionals, implementing innovative solutions and technologies based on our projects.
